Officers killed by criminal acts
53
officers killed, 2025 · Down 17% from 2024
Timeline
Sworn officers killed by a criminal act in the line of duty, from the FBI's LEOKA program.
Source and method
Officers killed in accidents are their own series and never added in.
No rate. A few dozen officers a year: a rate over every resident would mean nothing, and the count of officers leaves out agencies that sent none, so no rate per officer is drawn either.
FBI Law Enforcement Officers Killed and Assaulted (LEOKA) · Calendar year · 2011 to 2025
- 2015 onCrimeDB moves from the Crime in the United States (CIUS) tables to the Crime Data API /leoka. Officers killed take the latest API pull for 2015 on, else the newest edition that reprints the year. Every other vintage stays beside it.

- Race recorded without ethnicity: split by NIBRS's recorded Hispanic share of each race
All 60 officers killed in 2023. Five races; Hispanic origin printed apart, never crossed with race, so each race holds Hispanic people too. Agencies report the officer's race from their own records and the offender's as they know it. Each race is split into Hispanic and not by the share NIBRS records Hispanic within that race for the closest role, nationwide (crimedb-race-split; 2021 on, earlier years take 2021's): a model, the lighter part of each bar. Nobody's recorded race changes; only Hispanic origin, which the source left out, is placed. The victim share is the starting point. LEOKA prints its own Hispanic count apart from race, so the split is scaled to add to it (each race's odds move by one factor).
