Timeline
Attacks the FBI counts as active shooter incidents: one or more people killing or trying to kill people in a populated area, nearly all with guns, and the people killed and wounded in them, civilians and officers, as the FBI printed them (the 20-year review for 2000 to 2019, each later report after).
Source and method
Gang, drug, domestic, barricade, and crossfire shootings are left out by design. The FBI finds them in news and its own files; police agencies do not report them. One attack can move a year's wounded by hundreds. A different count from mass killings; the two overlap and are never added.
No rate. An incident is not something that happens to a person, so incidents take no rate per resident; the people killed and wounded have one, per 1 million residents.

- 2000One study (FBI and ALERRT, 2014) found these incidents years later from open sources; not reported year by year.
- 2000The 20-year review (2021) added 28 incidents to the 305 published, without rechecking the 305; a year's count depends on the edition read. Pages show the review's figures.
- 2014Two-year reports for 2014 to 2017, then a report each year, each published the next year or so; prior years are not revised.
- 2018"Other" location added; wounded counts injuries not from gunfire, noted incident by incident (a general footnote from 2021).
- 2020Summaries stop naming shooters; sex and age read from "an identified male shooter, 26".
- 2022The reports print a nonbinary category from 2022; CrimeDB reads it as no sex recorded.
- 2025Led by the FBI's Office of Law Enforcement Engagement; summaries reformatted.

Hispanic is of any race; the other groups are not Hispanic. White+MENA includes Middle Eastern and North African people.
All 500 shooters, 2010 to 2025, every year added. AP's codes: Asian and Pacific Islander one code; Other is race unknown. The FBI prints no shooter's race. A shooter has a race where the incident links to one AP case, as AP recorded it. Offenders with no race recorded are placed by CrimeDB's name-based model (crimedb-bifsg-v2: first name, surname, and the county's residents), the lighter part of each bar; with AP's recorded race hidden, its sums land within 2% of AP's counts for White, Black, Hispanic, and Asian+NHPI offenders, though it puts about one person in five in the wrong group. AIAN and two or more races can't be checked and stay race unknown, as do offenders with no name. The FBI's summaries stop naming shooters in 2020, so the model reaches only earlier years. Rate: shooters per 1 million people in the group; – means no rate for that group.
Of these shooters, 51% have no recorded race. They are in no group's rate, so each rate is a floor.
