Motor vehicle theft reported to the FBI.

Source and method

FBI Uniform Crime Reporting, Return A and NIBRS ยท Calendar year ยท 1960 to 2025

  • 1985 onCrimeDB moves from the FBI UCR master files on the 2008 CD to the Return A master file. The Crime Data Explorer serves Return A from 1985 only, so 1960 to 1984 come from the FBI's 2008 CD.
  • 1985 onThe Crime Data API /summarized totals and the Return A master file hold the same records side by side. CrimeDB uses the Return A master file; the other is kept as a check. The FBI's current monthly totals, rewritten in place. Every pull is kept as a vintage and checks CrimeDB's counts.
  • 1995โ€“2009CrimeDB moves from the FBI printed Uniform Crime Reports to the Crime in the United States (CIUS) web editions, 1995 to 2009. Crime in the United States goes online with the 1995 edition; the printed reports end with 1994.
  • 2010 onCrimeDB moves from the Crime in the United States (CIUS) web editions, 1995 to 2009 to the Crime in the United States (CIUS) tables. From the 2010 edition every table is read cell by cell: web editions to 2019, the Crime Data Explorer from 2020.
  • 2021NIBRS only, many large agencies missing; shown alone, never joined to other years
  • 2021 onCrimeDB moves from the Crime in the United States (CIUS) tables to the NIBRS national and state estimates. The national estimate that leads a timeline is the FBI's from Crime in the United States to 2020 and the FBI and BJS NIBRS estimate from 2021, with a break at the change.
  • 2022Summary counts accepted again
  • 2022โ€“2025The NIBRS state incident files and the NIBRS national master file hold the same records side by side. CrimeDB uses the NIBRS national master file; the other is kept as a check. The zips are the frozen snapshot the FBI's NIBRS tables were built from, 1% to 5% fewer incidents than the rebuilt master file (2025 equal). They check those tables.
  • 2023Wisconsin, West Virginia, and Wyoming come from the NIBRS state incident files, filling a gap in the NIBRS national master file. The 2023 master file stops partway through Wisconsin and has no West Virginia or Wyoming rows, and the FBI has not reissued it (checked 2026-10-08). The normalized NIBRS records take those states' incidents from the zips.

The Rate view's race lines, from 2021. Each group's line is its people counted per 100,000 people in the group, in the agencies that sent incident detail to the FBI: the Census count of the group scaled by the share of people those agencies police. Hispanic is of any race; the other groups are not Hispanic. The dashed line is everyone in the role, any race or none.

โ€“ means no rate: a group the source does not count apart that year, or no people to divide by. People whose race is not known are in no group's rate, so each rate is a floor.
