Source and method

FBI Uniform Crime Reporting, Return A and NIBRS · Calendar year · 1960 to 2025

  • 1985 onCrimeDB moves from the FBI UCR master files on the 2008 CD to the Return A master file. The Crime Data Explorer serves Return A from 1985 only, so 1960 to 1984 come from the FBI's 2008 CD.
  • 1985 onThe Crime Data API /summarized totals and the Return A master file hold the same records side by side. CrimeDB uses the Return A master file; the other is kept as a check. The FBI's current monthly totals, rewritten in place. Every pull is kept as a vintage and checks CrimeDB's counts.
  • 1995–2009CrimeDB moves from the FBI printed Uniform Crime Reports to the Crime in the United States (CIUS) web editions, 1995 to 2009. Crime in the United States goes online with the 1995 edition; the printed reports end with 1994.
  • 2010 onCrimeDB moves from the Crime in the United States (CIUS) web editions, 1995 to 2009 to the Crime in the United States (CIUS) tables. From the 2010 edition every table is read cell by cell: web editions to 2019, the Crime Data Explorer from 2020.
  • 2021NIBRS only, many large agencies missing; shown alone, never joined to other years
  • 2021 onCrimeDB moves from the Crime in the United States (CIUS) tables to the NIBRS national and state estimates. The national estimate that leads a timeline is the FBI's from Crime in the United States to 2020 and the FBI and BJS NIBRS estimate from 2021, with a break at the change.
  • 2022Summary counts accepted again
  • 2022–2025The NIBRS state incident files and the NIBRS national master file hold the same records side by side. CrimeDB uses the NIBRS national master file; the other is kept as a check. The zips are the frozen snapshot the FBI's NIBRS tables were built from, 1% to 5% fewer incidents than the rebuilt master file (2025 equal). They check those tables.
  • 2023Wisconsin, West Virginia, and Wyoming come from the NIBRS state incident files, filling a gap in the NIBRS national master file. The 2023 master file stops partway through Wisconsin and has no West Virginia or Wyoming rows, and the FBI has not reissued it (checked 2026-10-08). The normalized NIBRS records take those states' incidents from the zips.

Hispanic is of any race; the other groups are not Hispanic. The dashed line is everyone in the role, any race or none.

Every year, 2021 to 2025. – means the source's codes that year hold no such group.

1991 on: One code list since 1991: 11 firearm (type not stated), 12 handgun, 13 rifle, 14 shotgun, 15 other firearm, 20 knife or cutting instrument, 30 blunt object, 35 motor vehicle or vessel, 40 personal weapons, 50 poison, 60 explosives, 65 fire or incendiary device, 70 drugs, narcotics, or sleeping pills, 85 asphyxiation, 90 other, 95 unknown, and 99 none. Unlike the SHR's 90, NIBRS's 90 is other weapon only.

An offense recorded with more than one weapon counts once under each, so the rows add to more than all offenses.

Every year, 1976 to 2025. – means the source's codes that year hold no such group.

Of which placed by CrimeDB: the part of each group CrimeDB placed (race recorded, ethnicity left blank: placed by CrimeDB's split); the rest of each group is as the source recorded it.

1976 to 1979: The first race codes: White, Negro (Black), American Indian, Chinese, Japanese, and Other. Asian holds only Chinese and Japanese people; Other names no race, so it is race unknown. No ethnicity field: each race holds its Hispanic people. Officers record race and ethnicity, often by sight or from a victim's or witness's account; where ethnicity is recorded, most Hispanic people are coded White (93% of Hispanic victims in states that record it well).

1980 to 2016: Asian and Pacific Islander in one code. Ethnicity has a field, but from 1987 it is recorded for a fifth to a half of people, too few to split race by, so each race holds its Hispanic people. Officers record race and ethnicity, often by sight or from a victim's or witness's account; where ethnicity is recorded, most Hispanic people are coded White (93% of Hispanic victims in states that record it well).

2017 on: From 2017 Asian and NHPI are apart, and ethnicity is recorded for about 70% of offenders and 80% of victims with a race; the rest are split by CrimeDB's stated rules, state by state. Officers record race and ethnicity, often by sight or from a victim's or witness's account; where ethnicity is recorded, most Hispanic people are coded White (93% of Hispanic victims in states that record it well).

2017 to 2025: each group includes people with a race and no ethnicity recorded, placed by CrimeDB's stated rules; before 2017, each race as recorded, its Hispanic people inside.

Hispanic is of any race; the other groups are not Hispanic. White+MENA includes Middle Eastern and North African people. From 2017 Asian and NHPI are apart, and ethnicity is recorded for about 70% of offenders and 80% of victims with a race; the rest are split by CrimeDB's stated rules, state by state. Officers record race and ethnicity, often by sight or from a victim's or witness's account; where ethnicity is recorded, most Hispanic people are coded White (93% of Hispanic victims in states that record it well).

Every year, 1976 to 2025. – means the source's codes that year hold no such group.

1976 to 2016: The FBI's homicide report files as sent; 1976 to 1984 from the Murder Accountability Project's copy of them.

2017 on: Rebuilt by the FBI from its NIBRS-era database: NIBRS codes join (sex X for the unknown offender, ages NN and NS), and a record can count more victims than the 11 it describes.

The homicide reports give the first victim's relationship to each offender, so the first victim takes the closest; every other victim's relationship is unknown.
